Sage Hill School believes that a transformative high school experience, that allows each individual to become the best possible version of him or herself, is best achieved through a balanced life that involves the concerted expression of mind, body and heart.
In 2010, Sage Hill introduced an innovative new program, Spring at Sage, to create a valuable year-end experience for students. For approximately one week following AP and final exams, Spring at Sage allows students of all grade levels to pursue their passions in an intensive seminar or project that nurtures leadership, creativity, risk-taking, and engagement with the world beyond the classroom. Students share their Spring at Sage experiences with the school community and finish their year recharged and ready to inspire others.
Students create their own Spring at Sage experience by selecting from one of three options:
On-campus Seminar Series. Seminars enable students of all grade levels and teachers to delve deeply into areas of interest that either extend from or lie beyond the traditional school-year curriculum. Students are strongly encouraged to propose seminar topics and collaborate with teachers to research and lead their own seminars. Students then share their seminar’s work with the school community.
Independent Project program. Juniors and seniors may choose independent projects that can take place on or off-campus. These projects can take the form of an internship or intensive individual research in an area of interest, and Independent Projects can be an extension of coursework, a Service Learning opportunity, or the beginning /culmination of a year-long independent study. Interested students submit proposals for review by a faculty committee and are assigned faculty advisors. For projects that involve an outside organization, students must have an advisor from that organization to whom they report. Students are required to maintain a blog or other form of public record of the evolution of their project.
The Global Experience. Educational trips are open to students of all grade levels and include science research trips, language study tours, and cultural explorations. The Global Experience may also combine on-campus seminars with nearby field trips that may or may not be overnight. The Global Experience culminates in an opportunity to share their discoveries with the school community.
