Girls Tennis


Sage Hill Girl’s Tennis is having an outstanding year, both Varsity and JV.
The JV are undefeated in Academy League with wins over St. Margaret’s, Oxford Academy, and Whitney, with three league matches to go. Leading the team are Tess Alexander and Abby Ruck in doubles, Mara Beard, Kimia Vakili, Briana Rayhaun, and Alex Morales in singles. This group has been working out with the varsity, have played varsity matches for the Lightning, and will be moved up to the varsity when the JV season ends.
As a team the Varsity is ranked #3 in the CIF SS Division Three Weekly Top Ten Poll and #9 in the OC Register Weekly Top Ten Preps Poll of any team in Orange County. In Academy League the Lightning defeated Whitney away 16-2, Oxford Academy away 16-2, Brethren Christian at home 18-0, and Crean Lutheran at home 17-1 in the first round. In a huge non-league away match against Woodbridge, ranked #10 in the CIF-SS Divisions One Top Ten Weekly Poll, Sage defeated the Warriors for the first time, 10-8. To date Sage has defeated CIF-SS D1 ranked teams Tesoro, Laguna Beach, Mater Dei, along with Woodbridge.
In tournament play Sage lost in the finals of the Lightning invitational to Newport Harbor, the CIF-SS D2 #2 ranked team in the Weekly Poll; won the Prep Classic defeating Nevada State Champion Bishop Gorman in the semi-finals and South Carolina state champion Wacammaw in the finals. This past weekend Sage finished first in the Division III Invitational which included #1 ranked West Ranch, #2 ranked St. Margaret’s, #3 Sage Hill, and Long Beach Wilson.
The Lightning’s #1 player, junior Liana Korber swept all her matches against Whitney, Brethren Christian, Woodbridge, and Crean Lutheran, and leads the team in overall wins. Senior Ava Soleimany also swept all her matches and went undefeated in singles and doubles in the Divisions III Invitational. She, along with senior Casey Astorino and junior Lauren Hsu were named to the All Tournament Team. Ava was also honored as Player of the Week in the OC Register. Junior Kimberly Brown is second to Liana in number of individual wins in singles and doubles. She plays in the #2 singles position in the line-up. Freshman Amira Tarsadia and junior Molly Wang are the #3 doubles team, behind Astorino/Hsu at #2 doubles and Katie Bick/Rian Billingsley at #1 doubles.
