On Saturday, March 27th, Sage Hill School will welcome friends, neighbors, students and their families to its ninth annual Multicultural Fair, to be held at the school’s Wilkins Town Square. Fair organizers, who expect more than 1,000 attendees, have planned a daylong celebration of Orange County’s diverse population, offering up authentic world food booths, lively entertainment, a silent auction, an ethnic bazaar, and a slew of hands-on activities.
“The Multicultural Fair is the one time each year that we get to showcase the variety of cultures that exist on our campus in one jam-packed, fun-filled day,” said Gordon McNeill, Sage Hill’s head of school. “We are thrilled to open our doors to our local neighbors in Newport Coast, Laguna Beach, Irvine, Newport Beach and beyond to see the diversity that helps define not only Sage Hill School, but all of Orange County.”
Each year the artwork of a Sage student is selected to represent and promote the fair. This year’s theme, “Music from Around the World,” resulted in a piece created by junior Grace Guan. Grace’s work is an abstract collage in mixed media, using watercolor, pen and ink, collaged prints and gesso glazes.
Foods From ‘Round the World and Center Stage Entertainment
Organized and run by Sage Hill parents, the Multicultural Fair will serve up freshly prepared ethnic foods, ranging from Korean barbeque to Russian treats. The entertainment schedule features singers, dancers and other performances by both Sage Hill students and families, and the greater Orange County community. Featured performers include the Russian band “Limpopo”, Irish band “Gypsy Kiss” and Sage student Cambria Detken, who gained national prominence in 2009 by winning Ellen Degeneres' Bathroom Concert Series.
Hands-on Fun for Kids and Adults
Other activities include a colorful ethnic bazaar for take-home souvenirs, a silent auction of themed baskets, children’s treasure hunts, cultural face-painting, calligraphy, and henna tattoos. The fair will run from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Admission is $5 per person at the door, with children 12 and under free. Food tickets, sold on site, are $1 each. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Sage Hill’s Financial Aid Endowment Fund.
