Sage Hill Robotics Wins Big at Local Competition
Sage Hill Robotics was part of a winning alliance at Beach Blitz 2016, a robotics tournament held October 8-9 at Marina High School in Huntington Beach. Many of the top teams from Los Angeles County and Orange County competed.
Beach Blitz 2016 was very exciting, according to Sage Hill Robotics faculty advisor Chris Vivo. Competing teams used robots from last season to compete in this inaugural pre-season event. Qualifying rounds consisted of 12 matches. Each match is between alliances of three robots, and for every match the alliance changes. Therefore, Sage Hill had two different teams’ robots in its alliance for each match. “At the conclusion of the qualifying rounds, teams are seeded based on their performance in these qualifying matches. We were seeded 12th out of 28 teams after the qualifying rounds,” said Vivo.
But Sage Hill Robotics drew a lot of attention, said Vivo. Next, the top eight teams picked their partners for the direct elimination rounds. The current world champions, the No. 1 seed, and the current Orange County regional champions, the No. 3 seed, picked Sage Hill to be in their alliance during the direct elimination rounds. It was a great combination, according to Vivo.
“Our three-team alliance was undefeated in the direct elimination rounds and the alliance became the tournament champions!” said Vivo.
